Georgia provides a natural gas discount for qualifying senior citizens — one of the few targeted reductions available in a deregulated market. It is not automatic. How to apply

1. Confirm the current criteria with the Georgia Public Service Commission or the regulated provider.
2. Gather documentation — proof of age, proof of household income, and your gas account number from a recent bill.
3. Submit the application through the route the provider specifies.
4. Check your next bill to confirm the discount has been applied, and follow up if it has not.
5. Note any renewal requirement. Eligibility is often re-certified periodically; a missed renewal quietly ends the discount.

Weigh the discount against shopping the market

This is the part worth thinking about carefully. The senior discount is attached to a particular arrangement, and the rate under that arrangement is not always the lowest available. Do the arithmetic at your own usage rather than assuming: multiply each per-therm rate by your monthly therms, add each monthly service charge, then subtract the discount where it applies.
