How to score a Georgia natural gas provider: rates, monthly charges, contract terms, service quality and billing practices.

Choosing a natural gas marketer on advertised rate alone is how households end up disappointed. The rate is the headline, but contract terms, the monthly service charge and how a company behaves when something goes wrong all affect what you actually pay and how much hassle you absorb. This is a framework for scoring marketers on the things that matter.

1. Total cost at your usage — not the headline rate

Score every marketer on (rate × your therms) + monthly service charge, run at your own usage rather than an average. A plan with a low rate and a $9.95 monthly charge can lose to a higher rate with no charge, especially in a low-usage home. 2. Contract terms

  • Term length — does it match how long you will be at this address?
  • Early termination fee — your cost of changing your mind, commonly $50–$150.
  • What happens at the end — the single most important clause. Most contracts roll to a month-to-month variable rate that can be far above market.
  • Rate type — a fixed plan is predictable; variable is not capped.

3. Transparency

Score how hard the marketer makes it to find the full picture. Are the rate, term, monthly charge and termination fee all stated plainly before you enroll, or does the service charge only surface at the final step? Is the end-of-term behavior disclosed clearly? 4. Billing practice

  • Accurate, itemised bills that separate supply from AGL delivery charges — see understand your natural gas bill.
  • Actual meter reads rather than long runs of estimates.
  • Budget billing available if you want level payments.
  • Payment options that suit you, and a sensible due date.
  • Clear, early notice before a contract rolls over.

5. Customer service, tested

Call the support line before you enroll, with a real question about the plan. You will learn more in five minutes than from any review page: how long you wait, whether the answer is accurate, and whether the representative tries to upsell instead of answering. Check whether support hours cover when you could actually call, and whether there is a route beyond the first line.

6. Complaint history

Look at the pattern rather than individual reviews — every company has unhappy customers. Recurring themes matter: repeated billing errors, difficulty cancelling, or aggressive door-to-door sales are all signals. 7. Promotions, discounted properly

Bill credits and gift cards are real money but are one-off, while the rate applies every month. Spread any promotion across the full term before comparing — a $50 credit on a 12-month plan is about $4.17 a month, which rarely offsets a materially worse rate. Also check what triggers it: some require several months of on-time payment first.

8. What should not sway you

  • Claims about reliability or safety. Every marketer delivers through Atlanta Gas Light. No marketer provides better gas or faster leak response.
  • Discounts on delivery charges. Impossible — they are PSC-set and identical.
  • Pressure to decide today. A good rate survives a night of thinking.
